When should I register my Lasting Power of Attorney?

It is advisable to register your LPA as soon as you can as once it has been registered, you can have peace of mind knowing if you ever become unable to manage your own affairs your chosen trusted person will be able to act on your behalf.

An LPA cannot be used until it is  registered with the Office of the Public Guardian but even when the LPA has been registered, so long as you have capacity to do so you can still manage your own affairs for as long as you wish to.

If you lose mental capacity but signed when you had capacity, an attorney may register for them but will not be able to act on your behalf until registration is complete. Registration at present takes thirteen weeks. .

Richard Patterson can advise you on registering your LPA and guide you through the whole process of form-filling and official registration.
